Dossier Scorpion

The Pulmonoscorpius, or simply Scorpion, is one of the creatures in ARK: Survival Evolved.

Basic Info

Dossier

  • Wild: I'm not sure why, but the giant scorpions I've seen on the island are far more disturbing than most of the Dinosaurs. Rather than simply kill its prey, Pulmonoscorpius gigantus injects its victims with a tranquilizing poison, then eats its unconscious prey alive.
  • Domesticated: Trying to tame a monster like Pulmonoscorpius gigantus sounds like a crazy idea, but I suppose the ability to knock out a foe could come in handy. It could certainly make incapacitating some of the island's other creatures much easier.
  • Known Information: This subspecies has a large pair of pincers that seem connected to the same toxin sacs as the tail. I've never seen another scorpion that has this adaptation, but I've never seen another scorpion that is larger than I am, either.

Behavior

Pulmonoscorpius will attack almost anything on sight. One sting from a level 90 will increase topor by 100 over 10 seconds

Taming

Level 1 - Level 30
Animals above level 30 will require additional resources to tame.

Time

Taming a Scorpion can take between 30 minutes to - 1.5 hours depending on the animal's level and your taming strategy.

Preferred Food

Note that these are approximations, always remember to bring extra supplies.
Scorpions prefer Spoiled Meat, but will also eat Raw Meat.
Updated as of Patch v180.41

KO Strategy

To knock it unconscious easier, use the Slingshot or Tranquilizer Arrows. You can also use another scorpion to knock it out. Once it is unconscious, use Narcotics. Narcotics and Spoiled Meat will tame it most efficiently, although Narcoberries and Raw Meat also work. When tamed, they can eat both raw meat and spoiled meat, but they prefer spoiled meat.

Stinging

Patch 178.x and above

The poison from one sting is applied over a duration of 10 seconds, so stinging in rapid succession will not knock out the target faster. The poison buffs do not stack. You need to refresh the sting every 10 seconds to deal the least amount of damage and maximum torpor.

Torpor and damage applied from a sting increases as melee damage % increases and is linear. At 100% melee a scorpion sting will deal 45 torpor over 10 seconds and 15 damage instantly [1].

An example of the increase in torpor and damage is as follows;

  • At 100% torpor is 45 and damage is 15
  • At 200% torpor is 90 and damage is 30
  • At 300% torpor is 135 and damage is 45

Working out your scorpions torpor and damage applied per sting is as simple as multiplying your melee damage % number by 0.45 for torpor and 0.15 for damage.

  • Scorpion A has 367.9% melee. Scorpion A will deal 367.9 x 0.45 = 165.6 torpor over 10 seconds and 367.9 x 0.15 = 55.2 damage instantly.

Testing has shown this is true on both conscious and unconscious animals.

Notes/Trivia

  • Currently it is impossible to get a tamed scorpion out of the cave where you obtain the Artifact of the Hunter (location: 80.2 / 53.5) and (location: 70.6 / 86.1)
  • Probably the best terrestrial creature to climb mountains and pass through forests.
  • The scorpion's venom can even knock a Tyrannosaurus unconscious, but it will take time, and the scorpion's health must be upgraded to survive the ordeal.
  • They might be the same species as Brontoscorpio (in real life), which was present in the Silurian, while Pulmonoscorpius is only found in the Carboniferous.
  • Best to have low taming effectiveness (punch it but don't kill it to lower easily) as the effectiveness only affects the attack damage and carrying weight. Where its level affects the strength of torpor on higher difficulties.
  • Pulmonoscorpius' Melee % directly affects their ability to knock out an opponent. [2]
